Letter from Garry Chick, former editor of Play & Culture

Dear Ernst:

It was good to see you in Las Vegas and I found your presentation on PlayArt to be highly interesting and informative. I am sure that your article in Play & Culture will receive the same response from the Journal audience.

I was also very pleased to hear that the travelling exhibition of the PlayArt project is well under way. You are to be commended for your recognition and development of an art form that is both old and important but has not been recognized as such, in general. As you know, scholars such as Huizinga have commented on the play element in civilization and, indeed, on the role of play as a civilizing force. Your work on the objectification of play in art, of art to be played with as well as being playful, represents more than simply an evolutionary step from traditional play art forms, like the piñata, and you are to be saluted for your efforts.

I hope that the travelling exhibition of PlayArt will be extremely successful and I anticipate that both interest in and support for your initiatives will be forthcoming. Again, it was good to have the opportunity to see you in Las Vegas and I look forward to the appearance of your manuscript in the journal. I expect to see you in London, Ontario, next spring, if not before.

Please keep in touch.

Sincerely,

Garry Chick, Ph.D.
